"Señor Gato" (The Adventures of Señor Gato), by independent author and illustrator Katherine Moore-Valdes, is a warm and witty story for young children, about an inspiring friendship between a little girl and a cat from the debuting author and illustrator Katherinne Moore-Valdés.
Written in Spanish and English appearing side-by-side, this beautifully illustrated children's book is for all little girls and boys that love animals and adventures and are bilingual or want to learn a new language.
As a bilingual story, this book respects linguistic idiosyncrasies; promoting language and learning abilities, as well as awareness of different cultures.
Depicting the values of belonging, friendship and individuality, this story would let your little one's love for animals come to life and they would want to read it over and over again!
Katherine Moore-Valdes is a Chilean living in England. She is a mum of two young children, aged 7 and 2 years old.
Her background is in Engineering in Agricultural Sciences with a specialisation in Economy. I also have a MSc in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and I'm an Associate Fellow in the Higher Education Academy in the UK.
She wanted to become an Independent Author because she wanted to create resources to help parents in their journey of raising bilingual children.
The series of "Señor Gato" picture books was inspired by her daughter and her lovely friendship with the neighbour's cat, in the midst of the pandemic. The idea of writing a bilingual book had been already in her mind when she decided to write about this relationship between the child and the animal.
Katherine Moore-Valdes loves being creative and using her skills to create products made with love and passion, for bilingual children.
This is her advice for aspiring authors:
* Follow your passion! Doing what you love will not only bring you happiness, but will also let your creativity and talent shine and that's reflected on the products/service you deliver.
* Don't be scared of failure! Failure is part of life and it just often means learning how to do better next time. Life is full of opportunities. Even if you get some rejection, it doesn't mean you are not talented, it means you need to carry on trying.
* Always welcome opportunities to learn! You never stop learning and having the curiosity and drive to carry on learning new things will make you stronger as a professional.
This is a fun and educational picture book that captures the friendship of a small girl and a cat. The story is easy to read and takes the children into the imaginative play that happens with the interaction of this girl with the cat. It is perfect for children who are learning Spanish or English as a second language.
The illustrations are very well designed and match the spirit of the story: fun and lighthearted.
I like that at the end of the book, the author offers a vocabulary in both languages, for the children to recall the main words and to practise their pronunciation.
I highly recommend it for households, libraries and schools.
My daughter enjoyed this book so much! She laughed when Señor Gato was trying to copy the girl. She loved the fun story, as it has short sentences that she could easily relate to.
